Wickham
Wickham was named in honour of John Clements Wickham RN of HMS Beagle ,
who carried out surveys of the Australian coastline between 1838 and
1841.
When
Cape Lambert was chosen for the site for the power, processing and port
facilities for the Robe project the present site for Wickham was
chosen. The first permanent buildings were six houses at the
western end of Rosewood Place.
Wickham was built by Cliffs
Robe River Iron Associates in 1970, to accommodate their workforce and
families and was to be the ‘sister’ town for Pannawonica, both being
‘closed’ towns. Wickham was gazetted as a town in 1971 and has a
population of 2,100. Facilities in the town include fire station,
police station, hospital, primary school, shopping centre, playing
fields and parks, underground sewerage and power facilities and
sewerage treatment plant.
