Point Samson
Point Samson derives its name from Michael Samson, who accompanied FT
Gregory on his expedition in 1861, and as second officer on the Tien
Tsin, accompanying Walter Padbury in 1863. The town was gazetted in
1909.
In 1910 Point Samson was established as the main port for the Roebourne
area, due to the problems associated with the original port at Cossack.
In the 1950s the town became the major outlet port for the blue asbestos mining industry based at Wittenoom.
When
the State Ships ceased their service to Point Samson in 1976 the port
lost its function and today the town is a base for a small fishing
industry and is an important recreational area for tourists and local
residents.
